Day Three: Roman Mosaics
- The floors of Roman buildings were often richly decorated with mosaics - tiny coloured stones (tesserae).
- Scenes of history, everyday Roman life, statement of wealth and importance.
- Stuck to the floor with mortar, a type of cement. Each mosaic used thousands of pieces to make a pattern.
Day Four: Pont Du Gard
- Largest of ancient Roman aqueducts
- Mostly held together without mortar
- Descends under 1" over expansion of 900 feet(!) so water is channeled to a city
Day Five: Laocoon and His Sons
- One of most famous Roman sculptures
- Example of human agony
- Excavated in 1506 after being found buried in a garden!
- Sculpted 42-20 BCE
